About Mommy Makeovers

Mommy Makeover Houston, TX

After the joys and challenges of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, many women find that their breasts, abdomen, thighs, and arms are permanently altered. In many cases, these changes to their body cannot be fully restored with a healthy diet and exercise alone. Breasts get larger, only to sag later, losing their volume and shape. Many women gain weight that will not go away. For instance, the hips and thighs may accumulate excess fat that remains post-birth. On the other hand, massive weight loss post-pregnancy can lead to a different problem with sagging skin that does not have the tightness it once did. Due to the expansion of the uterus during pregnancy, the abdomen also expands and can have difficulty contracting back to the shape it had before.

If you are longing for your pre-baby body and are ready for a change, consider a mommy makeover. With a mommy makeover, you can wear that sleeveless shirt, that body-hugging dress, or that summer skirt that has been hiding in your closet, all with confidence and comfort. Combining several procedures makes this treatment remarkably efficient, and does not increase the risk of complications. (1) The most common procedures that we perform during a mommy makeover include breast lifts, breast augmentation, liposuction, and tummy tucks. This treatment can have a more profound effect on self-esteem than individual cosmetic procedures. (2)

Breast Lift / Augmentation

After pregnancy and breastfeeding, breasts can look and feel deflated or uneven. A breast augmentation using silicone or saline implants can restore the youthful volume and symmetry that was lost. If you have been considering breast enhancement surgery and also wish to make other improvements to your body, a mommy makeover is an excellent opportunity.

While a breast augmentation adds volume, a breast lift can address sagging or drooping breasts. As part of a mommy makeover, a breast lift can improve the shape and position of the breasts by removing excess fat, skin, and tissue to reinforce the structure of the breast. Using a combination of these procedures, Dr. Sukkar or Dr. Bedolla can elevate your breasts to a perkier position, while restoring the natural volume that you have lost throughout the breastfeeding process.

Breast Reduction

For some women, pregnancy and breastfeeding may have increased the size of their breasts to become larger than they prefer. Large breasts can cause back pain and other health concerns. A breast reduction surgery is a mommy makeover option to help reduce the size of your breasts and create symmetry and a refined shape. The breast reduction procedure is much like the breast lift but with a greater emphasis on the removal of skin, fat, and tissue to provide manageable breasts.

Liposuction

After pregnancy, many women are left with stubborn pockets of fat throughout the body. Your surgeon can utilize highly advanced liposuction procedures to effortlessly eliminate the excess fat, and restore a sculpted and slim physique. The procedure involves breaking up and suctioning out fat cells using a tube-like tool called a cannula.

Tummy Tuck

Mommy Makeover Houston, TX

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is one of the most popular mommy makeover procedures. It can eliminate unwanted fat, tighten sagging skin, and strengthen lax abdominal muscles. If your stomach has been a problem area for you since giving birth, a tummy tuck with Dr. Sukkar or Dr. Bedolla will help restore your toned and tight midsection.

Arm Lift

Many of our Houston patients find that their arms are permanently soft and heavy after gaining weight during pregnancy. As part of your mommy makeover, your surgeon may perform an arm lift to eliminate this excess fat and sagginess, sculpting tight and toned arms that look incredible in sleeveless tops.

Thigh Lift

Stubborn fat on the inner and outer thighs can be highly resistant to diet and exercise alone. Fortunately, including a thigh lift as part of your mommy makeover can eliminate the excess skin and fat, restoring slender and sexy pre-pregnancy legs.

Other Procedures

Sometimes, we can include non-surgical procedures such as laser treatments or injectables within a mommy makeover treatment plan, depending on the individual case. Dr. Sukkar or Dr. Bedolla will use all the tools and resources available to provide you with complete and optimal results.

Who is a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

If pregnancy, childbirth, nursing, or aging have taken a toll on your body, a mommy makeover might be right for you. Mommy makeover surgery is best for women who want to see positive changes in their entire physique. An ideal candidate will be finished having children, as subsequent pregnancies will impact the results. In addition, you should be close to your target weight and without significant health conditions that could complicate your surgery. You also need to be able to take time off work to recover and heal from surgery.

Some indications for a mommy makeover may include:

  • Sagging or deflated breasts
  • Stretched out or loose skin on the stomach
  • Excess fat on the hips and thighs
  • Stretch marks on the stomach, breasts, or hips
  • Diminished muscle tone in the stomach area
  • Sagging buttocks that lack firmness

Mommy Makeover Procedure

We typically perform mommy makeovers as single surgeries. Occasionally, it may be necessary to split up the surgeries if the treatment plan is extensive. For example, the initial surgery usually involves a breast procedure, tummy tuck, and liposuction, while the second may include procedures on the arms or thighs. We typically administer general anesthesia to our patients due to the longer time it takes to complete mommy makeovers compared to other treatments. During a mommy makeover, your surgeon will make incisions in strategic locations. He makes these incisions along natural skin lines, which helps to minimize the appearance of scars.

The exact order of the procedures will vary in each individual case, but the breast procedures are usually first, followed by a tummy tuck and liposuction. Once he finishes every procedure, he will close the incisions with sutures. Next, we may fit the patient with a surgical bra or compression garment to the treatment areas to help facilitate healing. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight hours to complete, depending on the number of procedures that he combines.

Recovery

Recovery from your mommy makeover will require significant downtime due to the intensive nature of the treatment. We have broken up the typical recovery process by week:
Week 1: Your first week will be spent resting at home. Limit your daily activities and avoid any heavy lifting or other strenuous activities. We recommend that during this time you have someone around who can help you with day-to-day activities, as well as help with caring for kids or pets.

You can expect to feel some degree of pain and discomfort. The level of pain and discomfort will depend on your pain tolerance and experience. We can prescribe pain medication to help manage this.

To minimize scarring from the procedure, you can use our silicone-based scar therapy gel, silicone strips, and sunscreen. Avoid exposing your scars to the sun and overstretching your healing incisions. Maintain these protocols throughout your recovery period.

You should start seeing the results of your procedure right away, though these will grow more prominent as swelling from the surgery goes down.

Week 2: Most people require about two weeks of recovery time before they can go back to their normal routine and activities, though it is best to keep it light. You still should not engage in exercise at this time. If you are up to it, you can return to work at the end of two weeks, though not if your job requires heavy or repetitive lifting. By this time, swelling should have begun to subside.

Week 3: Monitor your condition as you return to your daily activities. By this time, you should find you are able to return to work. Swelling should also be significantly reduced or no longer present.

Weeks 4 through 6: At the end of six weeks, you should be ready to resume most activities, including more strenuous exercise and lifting. By now, you should see excellent results, which will only develop further over time. Most women will see the final results after about six months to a year.

Results

The final results of your mommy makeover can bring you confidence in your body again. You will have a firmer and fitter body that makes you look and feel young again. These results will be long-lasting, and you can help maintain them by living a healthy and active life.

Post-Procedural Scarring

During a mommy makeover, your surgeon will make many small incisions in different areas of the body. He takes care to place these in areas that will minimize visible scars after surgery. Developing scars is part of the healing process, but with careful incision placement, we can help ensure they are well hidden and virtually invisible. To minimize scarring, we have several topical treatments that can help. Working with our expert team, we’ll make sure scars don’t get in the way of your beautiful new body.

FAQ

What are the risks associated with a mommy makeover?

With any surgery, cosmetic or otherwise, there are certain risks to be aware of, such as infection or scarring. A good plastic surgeon will do their best to minimize these potentialities.

Will I need to arrange for someone to drive me home after a mommy makeover?

Mommy makeovers always involve general anesthesia, so you will need someone to drive you home and assist you until the effects wear off completely.

How long does downtime last after a mommy makeover?

Patients typically return to work after two weeks of recovery.

Will I have to change how I sleep following a mommy makeover?

We typically recommend sleeping slightly elevated and on your back for several weeks as this helps to take pressure off your incisions and allow for proper healing.

What is a good age to get a mommy makeover?

Women of all ages can see great benefits from a mommy makeover. Some women opt for this procedure soon after their last child, but it may be many years later for some.

How soon after having a baby can I get a mommy makeover?

While the specific time you start your mommy makeover will depend on what procedures will be done as part of it, it is best to wait at least three months after childbirth before beginning the mommy makeover process. This should give the body sufficient time to recuperate from delivery. Speak with your doctor about what your mommy makeover will entail and what your body will be ready for.

How long will my mommy makeover results last?

Results from mommy makeover surgery are usually long-lasting. The results can last for several years. Keep in mind that you must maintain a healthy lifestyle. This will help to ensure the results of your surgery.

Is it possible to get a mommy makeover while I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No, since this is a major surgery, it is not safe while pregnant or breastfeeding. Expect to wait at least three months after childbirth and after breastfeeding is done before beginning a mommy makeover.

Will my breast surgery affect nipple sensitivity?

Most moms have no change in breast or nipple sensation after a mommy makeover. Occasionally, sensation might be slightly affected right after surgery. This usually resolves within a few weeks.

How much does a mommy makeover cost?

The cost of a Mommy Makeover will vary depending on the individual case. The type and number of procedures will play a role in the final cost.
